Insurance coverage for IgG therapy can, at times, seem overwhelming. IgG treatments are expensive. In addition, many of the medical conditions for which IgG is prescribed have not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Because they are not approved, they are considered off-label uses of IgG.
Off-label uses of IgG are supported by medical studies but manufacturers have not conducted the large scale clinical trials required to obtain FDA approval. For example, the use of IgG for most neurological and neuromuscular diseases (such as multiple sclerosis, myositis or myasthenia gravis) is considered an off-label use.
It is important to know that an off-label use does not prevent the treatment from being covered by most health plans. However, the treatment must be authorized in advance. The specialty pharmacy is often asked to provide additional and often detailed justification for the IgG treatment.
At IgG America we have extensive experience working with health plans and insurance companies. We make sure that you understand completely your health coverage for IgG therapy before providing any treatment.
